I'm a fintech writer, editor and speaker based in Los Angeles. I write and talk about
reinvention—for banks, fintech and myself—from a city that runs on it.

How I got here
How I got here
I grew up in a small town in Michigan, spending afternoons jumping on a trampoline in the backyard with my older brothers. Tom Petty sometimes played. Whitney Houston at other times.
In high school, I wrote a column for the local newspaper that explored high school life. I went to college at Pepperdine University to study journalism and to get to know Malibu, the setting of my favorite movie, Gidget. Back then, I dreamed of moving to New York to report on anything.
After college, I did. I moved to New York City and took a job covering jewelry fashion trends for a business audience (after interviewing at PlayGirl and a finance pub). From reviewing watches and jewelry in Switzerland, I moved on to cover the technologies debt collectors use to collect debt, and eventually, fintech for American Banker and Bankrate.
Along the way, I started doing panels and going on podcasts. Then, I made another leap: I ditched the cubicle, moved to Los Angeles, got a Maltipoo and named him Benedict.

These days, I'm an editor-at-large at Cornerstone Advisors, where I craft content for a banker and credit union audience and host Money isn't Everything, a show about early-stage fintech ideas. I also speak on panels at conferences like AFT and Fintech Meetup and write a monthly LinkedIn editor's note called Finteching with Mary.

Benedict—named after Benedick from Much Ado About Nothing—is my bestie. We met at a rescue shop after I got back from a wedding in China, where my mom was my date. He had just been returned for "male aggression."
In a city of dreamers, we created shared ones: I toss a ball. He wags his tail. I buy the strawberries. We both eat them. Once, we got kicked off a plane.
